How homeowners opt in to SMS
YourHOAVote sends transactional SMS messages only to homeowners who have explicitly opted in during the signup process. This page documents the opt-in interface, the verbatim consent text, and how to opt out.
This is the screen homeowners see at /onboarding/phone after verifying their identity. SMS opt-in is collected here, alongside the mobile-phone number.
What's your mobile number?
We'll text you a confirmation each time you vote and a reminder if a ballot is about to close. You can turn texts off later.
US mobile numbers only. No marketing.
The screenshot above is a faithful reproduction of the production opt-in screen. The consent checkbox is required to be checked before the form can be submitted. Both the phone number and the SMS opt-in checkbox are stored with a timestamp in our database.
Verbatim consent language
The exact label on the SMS opt-in checkbox, displayed alongside the input, reads:
"Text me when a new ballot opens. (You can change this later.)"
Above the checkbox, an explanatory paragraph confirms what we will use the number for: "We'll text you a confirmation each time you vote and a reminder if a ballot is about to close. You can turn texts off later."
What kinds of messages we send
- • Verification codes — a one-time 6-digit code during signup to confirm phone ownership.
- • Ballot-open notice — when a new ballot you are eligible to vote on opens.
- • Closing-soon reminder — sent once, approximately 24 hours before a ballot closes, if you haven't yet voted.
- • Vote confirmation — a receipt containing the unique receipt code, required by Pennsylvania Act 115 of 2022 as legal proof of vote.
- • Results notice — when a ballot is certified by the board.
Frequency varies with your association's ballot schedule — typically two to five messages per ballot. Standard message and data rates from your mobile carrier may apply.
How to opt out
At any time, homeowners can opt out of SMS notifications in either of two ways:
- 1. Reply STOP to any text message we send. The carrier sends a confirmation reply and blocks all future messages from our number. To re-subscribe later, reply START.
- 2. Visit account settings in the voting app. The Phone & notifications section has a toggle to disable ballot-open SMS without affecting your overall account.
We will never sell, rent, lease, or share your mobile number with any third party for marketing purposes.
